A double killer who murdered a father and his baby before trying to kill a judge during his trial has been executed.

James Bigby, 61, was put to death by lethal injection for shooting dead the dad and drowning his child in a sink in 1987.

The paranoid schizophrenic became the fourth death row inmate to die in Texas, US, this year when he was killed last night.

Officials said Bigby struggled to stop crying before he was taken into the death chamber, as he expressed sorrow for his crimes.

While strapped to a gurney with an intravenous drip attached to his arm, he turned to his victim’s family to ask for their forgiveness.

“I hope this will bring you peace and I’m sorry for all the pain and suffering,” he told them as his voice faltered.

“I hope that you could forgive me, but if you don’t, I understand. I don’t think I could forgive anyone who would have killed my children.”

As the drugs began to take effect, he prayed saying “I promise, I’m sorry,” several times.

He then began singing, “Jesus Loves Me” ,before taking a few breaths, snoring and stopping all movement.

Fourteen minutes after receiving the lethal injection, Bigby was pronounced dead at 6.31pm.

The former car mechanic was given the death penalty for the fatal shooting of Michael Trekell, 26, and the death of Mr Trekell’s four-month-old son, Jayson, at their home in Arlington on Christmas Eve.
